Thank you door county for another beautiful summer. Glad I could work and live in such a gorgeous place one more time before grad school and adulting ❤️ but I’m so ready for my next adventure in Milwaukee!!! #doorcounty#summertime#cavepoint
This unmanned light was built as a replacement for the nearby Eclipse Island Lighthouse, which was shut down following a tragic crane accident in which MV Cape Don crew member Ralph Meakins was killed.
The Cave Point tower was built by Albany contractor Peter Cooper and the light was powered by State electricity. The cylindrical 12m high concrete tower still remains, however the light itself was decommissioned when it was realised that the original Eclipse Island tower obscured its light at a critical point of its arc. As a result, the Eclipse Island Light was relit, although this time without its lantern room and magnificent lens.
The Cave Point Tower however retains its importance today as it's the site of a satellite ground receiver station as part of the International Satellite-aided Search and Rescue System that detects emergency beacon activated distress signals or automatic detection when a vessel sinks or a plane crashes.
There are two such stations within Australia, the other station being located near Bundaberg in Queensland.
The Cospas-Sarsat system is managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
Door County Wi is perfect for couples and kids of all ages. This place was so toddler friendly, clean, and beautiful. Our days were pretty cloudy and it was still gorgeous. Put this place on your list for places to go. It’s truly the Cape Cod of the Midwest. Flowers were in bloom and I couldn’t get enough pictures. We even got on Zillow last night 😂 We’ll be back!
