Happy Self-Help Saturday! If Sundays are for self-care, I like to think that Saturdays are for self-help! What is the difference? On Sunday, I encourage my clients (and myself) to practice mindfulness: to be present and alive in our Sunday, to stay in the here-and-now, and surrender our worries about the work week. This is because mindfulness is an excellent tool to help alleviate anxiety and other unhealthy emotions in the moment we are experiencing them!
If Saturdays are for self-help, this is when we actively utilize our REBT and CBT strategies and practice our homework exercises to make active changes within our lives by targeting the way that we think about our challenges, which helps us to feel and behave in healthier ways! Saturday is a day to dispute any irrational beliefs that you find yourself thinking; beliefs that are rooted in demands (this is musturbation), awfulizing/catastrophizing, frustration intolerance, global evaluations of self-worth, and global evaluations of others-worth or life's-worth!
While practicing mindfulness feels good and it can be highly effective in providing immediate short-term relief for anxiety, panic, depression, stress, chronic pain, and anger, the action-oriented and structured nature of REBT helps us to actually get better and stay better in the long-term! This is why I specialize in REBT, but I integrate mindfulness into my work (and my personal life) as well! An ominous lightning storm view from Holmes Beach, FL this past Wednesday night, as two thunderstorms converged over the Anna Maria Sound waters.
After wrapping up a storm timelapse video on the Sarasota waterfront, I packed up and started heading north up the coast on Long Boat Key. I knew the Sarasota storm and the other storm to the north near Tampa Bay were likely to converge near Anna Maria Island in about 20 minutes.
Halfway up the coast I was greeted with a one lane bridge construction zone and a line of traffic. I thought this was the end of the chase, as I was going to be stuck in traffic while the storms pushed off the coast. Luckily, I was part of the next batch to cross the bridge with only having to wait about two minutes. Whew.
I finally arrived just in time at the Kingfish boat ramp / park and got my camera setup. Moments later the new storm formed right over the waters in front of me with a barrage of lightning as seen in the photo above. What a night!
Caring is painful. Finding hope when everything feels hopeless can sometimes feel like your just being dilusional. Fighting for a better world for those that come after us occasionally feels like a lost cause. Sometimes our minds just shut down and we begin going through the motions because everything feels overwhelming. But we can’t ever let life or the world dim the light that lies within our hearts...for it is what will guide us through even the darkest of tunnels. Protect it, hold onto it, and believe in it.
