Wildlife photographers and filmmakers, have a wonderful opportunity and great responsibility to share stories about wildlife, stories that both celebrate and also raise concern around conservation issues. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat that is located in North, Southern, and East Africa, and a species lives in parts of Iran. These cats can be easily recognized by their yellowish tan fur with nearly 2000 black spots and white underbelly, a slender body, a deep chest, a small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and a long spotted tail. Now these aren't the biggest species of cat being that they are only 44 to 59 inches long, 3ft tall, and weigh 160 pounds. Now what these cats are famous for is their incredible speed. They can run at an amazing 70 mph and can reach 60 mph in just 3 seconds, but they can't keep up this speed for long, only from 45 seconds to 1 minute. Cheetahs, like lions, are the only other species of cat that live in groups. Although females live alone unless it's a female with cubs, males live in small groups called coalitions. Now these cats eat a number of prey like blesbok, impala, sprinbok, Thompson gazelle, bat-eared fox, bushbuck, kudu, sable antelope, and waterbuck. They less frequently prey on African Buffalo, ostriches, gemsbok, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog, and zebras. Now cheetahs eat fast, mostly because they aren't exactly able to really compete for food with other sturdier and bigger carnivores like African wild dogs, leopards, spotted hyenas, and of course lions. These predators will kill a cheetah or even a cheetah cub if they get the chance, but cheetah cubs have a special trick to deter predators, they lie in the grass and just lay their, notice how the cubs in the picture have a black and white back, just like a honey badger, which is an animal which isn't messed with by animal in Africa, even a lion, so the cubs have developed that same back pattern, so that way predators think that they are a sleeping honey badger and just leave them alone. Now cheetahs are in trouble, with only 7,100 left in the wild, they are threatened by habitat loss, poaching for the illegal pet, hunting them for sport, and conflict with human. If this continues, they could go extinct in the next few years.
