Kate Gerwin, a well-known restaurateur and mixologist, selected @merchantmadison as one of the best cocktail bars in the United States in a USA Today article.⠀
Gerwin, who was the first woman and first American to win the Bols Around the World Bartending Championship in 2014, has many accomplishments in the bartending industry. She works as a consultant for small market bar programs.⠀
USA Today decided to reach out to Gerwin to ask about her 10 favorite drink spots and Merchant was on the list.⠀
"I love bars that become local institutions. When a 'cocktail' bar finally opens in a smaller market, it becomes the hub for budding bartenders to learn. Then those people go off and open their own bars and restaurants, spreading the 'bug' and changing the way the community drinks. Merchant, a casual farm-to-table restaurant with a serious craft cocktail scene, is one of those bars," Gerwin says.⠀
Merchant, which won gold for Best Bar for Cocktails in Madison in 2019, has an expansive cocktail menu featuring traditional cocktails and innovative creations. Merchant also releases special seasonal cocktail menus that the bartenders create on a seasonal basis. The restaurant offers more than 50 classic cocktails year round.⠀

For my 40th birthday, we had friends over for a perfect afternoon on the patio, drank a 40 year old wine that my late Dad bought years ago, and set up a Sherry/Pimm’s/Soda/Snow Cone bar. May I age as well as the wine did for my next 40!!

• 70cl @theduppyshare rum (butterwashed)
• 50cl coconut milk
• 10cl coconut cream
• 80cl fresh chargrilled pineapple juice
• 5cl creme de banane
• 5cl falernum
• 10cl lime juice

We are easing into our Sunday evening with a firm favourite in the form of @ableforths Bathtub Gin.
Bathtub Gin is made using a technique called cold compounding. Compound gin involves flavourings (such as botanicals) simply being added to neutral grain spirit and then filtered out before bottling.
The blend is a combination of botanicals that include Juniper, Coriander, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Orange Peel and clove. This aromatic mix of botanicals gives Bathtub Gin it's very distinct flavour and the cold compound method gives it a slight tinge of colour.
Each bottle is hand wrapped with paper, twine and wax! The attention to detail in every aspect of this gin is evident in the presentation and taste of the gin and design of the bottle.
On the nose when you open the bottle there is a lovely big hit of Juniper with coriander undertones, warming and inviting.
To taste it is full of delicious aromatic flavour, a gentle spiced finish lingers on the palate.
Paired with Fever-Tree Indian tonic water & Orange it is a pretty perfect way to get Monday ready! @ableforths#thegintomytonic
