📚📚BOOK REPORT📚📚 Book: SHOE DOG “A Memoir by the creator of NIKE” by Phil Knight
My Reaction: Best book I’ve read in 2019.
Take-Aways: ✳️Incredibly raw, honest and extremely detailed account of an entrepreneur’s business journey & personal life. ✳️This is not a billionaire's brag book about wins or a Nike Promo. To the contrary, like many ultra successful entrepreneurs, this is a recollection of the journey, the process. As Phil mentions in his book, he’d love to "do it all over again."
✳️Phil does not mince words on his personal shortcomings, which I found courageous.
What surprised me: ✳️I expected a lot of "sport celebrity name dropping.” As far as I can remember, there was no mention of Tiger, Jordan, Kobe or Lebron, etc until close to the end of the book. ✳️Phil is a life long runner. It’s his first love and his form of meditation. Many of his heroes are runners and are highlighted in this book.
What I learned: ✳️In an era where “brash, ultra-extroverted” business leaders are highlighted by society, Phil is the polar opposite….a self described introvert with a disdain for all things sales. Effort speaks louder than one’s voice. ✳️There’s a commonality amongst highly successful entrepreneurs and Phil is no different. They recognize an opportunity...a gap in the marketplace, and despite little to no qualifications/formal training, they tell themselves and those going into business with them, “yep, I got this, no problem, I’ll get it done.” Some view this as deceptive, I tend to think it’s a sincere belief of one’s abilities…a monumental confidence to achieve a goal. ✳️Loyalty matters. Phil is extremely loyal to those he cares about, despite any huge flaws or missteps.
✳️There are no overnight success stories. Phil and Nike struggled for years, scrapped for access to capital and ran in the red for many years. It took many years to “hit it big”…I speak for all entrepreneurs in saying “I can relate." 😀
