SDL’s NEOWISE Contract Extended
Launched in 2009 for a planned one-year mission, the SDL-built Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope was put into hibernation in 2011 after its solid hydrogen coolant was depleted. In 2013, the instrument was reactivated. The mission, renamed NEOWISE, was tasked with surveying the population of near-Earth objects and comets and identifying potential threats. Nearing its ten-year anniversary, NEOWISE is still going strong and is the only asteroid-hunting sensor that is in space, using infrared, and able to locate and characterize dark asteroids. SDL’s NEOWISE contract was recently extended for another year. We will continue to participate in mission planning and coordination, command generation, anomaly resolution and daily processing, and analysis of telemetry data to assess instrument health and performance for NEOWISE.

As the new school year starts, we wish our interns good luck as they head into their senior years. Jonathan will be continuing with McClure part time as he finishes his coursework in Mechanical Engineering at SIUE and Phyllip will be helping us on an as-needed basis remotely as he finishes his coursework in Electrical Engineering at MIZZOU. So while their official internships have come to an end, we are excited to stay connected with these talented individuals! #internships#mcclure#mcclureengineering#engineer#engineering#summerinterns#stlbusiness
It’s Official! @NASA confirms mission to Jupiter’s water moon, Europa!
🚀 💧 • The Europa Clipper mission will target the ice-encrusted moon of Jupiter, which is considered a prime target in the search for life beyond Earth.
• Below its icy shell, Europa is thought to hold a 170km-deep body of water. (3rd image) - This could have the right conditions for biology.
• Due to launch in 2025, the Europa Clipper mission has now passed a stage called Key Decision Point C, a crucial marker on the road to the launch pad.
🗣"We are all excited about the decision that moves the Europa Clipper mission one key step closer to unlocking the mysteries of this ocean world," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA science mission directorate.
• Europa Clipper will carry out an in-depth investigation of the watery world, including whether it can support life in its subsurface ocean.
• Gravitational interactions with Jupiter generate tidal forces and heat, which keeps Europa's ocean liquid. The heating may even drive volcanic vents on the seafloor; on Earth, such vent systems support a wide array of life forms.

A lot of the times when we share posts about Boston Dynamics the reactions are very strong and often invoke fear and dread. Why do you think that is?
