To the girl that tries to rely only on herself, I wish you wouldn't.
I get it though. Trust me, I get it. The world feels unstable and unpredictable. It feels like it's safer to be self-sufficient when the reminders of your past hurts rise to the surface reminding you to again: "rely solely on yourself, it's safer. other people will hurt you, or worse yet, will ignore you. run away from that weak feeling."
Here's what I've found though (from one "self-sufficient" friend to another): the risk of vulnerability and putting your true self out there is worth the relationships that you WILL find that bring deep knowing, support, and understanding. You're wired to be with others. You are wired to need friends that see you, love you, and understand you.
I'm sorry for the hurt you've experienced and the countless ways you've felt abandoned or rejected. But I pray that as you lean into Jesus you'll discover the bravery to pursue deep relationships again where you're seen for all that you are, rough edges included, and yet accepted.
And when someone hurts you, I pray that you wouldn't believe the old narrative of self-sufficiency, but would instead turn to your Father. The God that sees you, accepts you, loves you, and cares for you in your most vulnerable moments of suffering or loneliness. That Friend can be relied on.

This mornings appointment with the Upper Limb Clinic was fantastic. It was so great to receive some good, positive news. J-Lee’s hands have significantly improved, his reach has extended and his fingers are beginning to straighten out. The splints he wears are having a fantastic affect on the development of his hands. I used to be worried that he wouldn’t be able to use his hands probably, when he was younger they were clenched in a tight fist.I used to squeeze makeup sponges in the little gap to encourage them to open. His nails used to cut into his palms because his fingers were consistently bent into a fist. Even when it is “smooth sailing,” and everything seems to be going well in my life, it is crucial to have constant contact with God. He cares about the smallest details of my life. And He says that I can come to Him with everything – all my requests – be it a “smooth” day or a rough day. The result of that constant, firm relationship with God, is that He will give me a peace which will guard my heart and mind from unrest and anxiety.
To do justly is an important matter. In Proverbs 12:3 it is written: “A man is not established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous cannot be moved.” Perhaps some people try to accomplish things and advance through anger and lying. But here it says that that isn’t possible! It is the root of the righteous which cannot be moved. And if we believe these words, and fight for righteousness, then we enter into a rich life. Then we will get firm roots, something that cannot be moved in the storms of life!

I must see myself and my life through God’s eyes: Why did He give me this body? This personality? These abilities? This family? These circumstances? Can I see that they are talents that have been entrusted to me? Trials and hardships, or good times and prosperity are all opportunities that God has entrusted to me personally!
God trusts me to use these possibilities to come to development and growth and gain eternal content, and He has given me the tools to do so. If I am willing, God gives me His Word to teach me what to do, and the Holy Spirit to give me the strength to carry it out.
