I am not one for sitting around the house too much! So when we heard a wine festival was happening in one of my favorite German towns we had to check it out. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is literally like stepping into a fairytale! I was also so excited to finally get to drink wine again. 🍷❤️

We have sleeping bags in two different tog weights, did you know?
Our 1 tog is perfect for warmer nights where jarmies aren't quite enough, or for wearing in the car seat as they don't contain any stuffing, just two layers of super soft organic cotton. The 2.5 tog is lovely and bungey and cosy. We don't recommend that you use the 2.5 tog in a car seat because the stuffing would compress in an accident and the child may slip out of the harness.
Our sleeping bags are compatible with a 5-point safety harness which means the child can stay in them in a car seat or pram.
They also have double poppers over the shoulders so you needn't wrestle delicate infant arms through the holes while they sleep.
You can change a nappy without taking people out of their sleeping bags by using the bottom of the double ended zip!
The sleeping bags come in sizes 0-6 months, 6-18 months and a generous 18-36 months.
WHEN THE FRESH PRODUCE COMES TO YOU🍌🍈 We have been saved! We JUST ran out of bananas (a major staple around here) and some guys came by selling fresh fruit, including BANANAS!!🍌🍌We also got some mamon chino (lychee) and this other fruit that shall remain nameless for the time being. ✨It’s Friday! For some people that doesn’t mean much, and for some people it means a LOT. Some of y’all have kids that just started the school year again.👩🏻🏫 For us it means the stock market is closed for the next 2 days which is always a welcome treat. Thankful for the opportunities and lifestyle the stock market provides but also grateful when it doesn’t run our day 📈👟 .
As of now, our weekend includes some fantasy football drafts (we love football and playing fantasy football is such a fun way to stay connected to our friends back at home) 🏈🏆and probably some pool and beach time. 🏝
What are your weekend plans?
Any trips? Any new restaurants? Meeting up with anyone? #costarica#puravida

Mittenwald & the Venn diagram of travel with children. ⛹️🤸♀️🚴♂️
Mittenwald is yet another über-picturesque southern Bavarian town. It's at the base of the Karwendel mountains and provides many opportunities to ride cable cars, be amazed by the peaks, and hike to your hearts content.
If it has been just me here, I would have hiked to the two nearby Alpine lakes. But, I'm with two little kids - this meant we could manage about 1-2 hours of walking, but needed lots of entertainment and snacks.
The parents try to find the intersection in the Venn diagram of kid/adult interests, so today we:
- walked around town enjoying the beautiful painted houses and found a playground
- walked along the blue Isar river and found another playground with pretty mountain views
- went to a cheese shop, tried the local buttermilk/whole milk (per kiddo preferences)
- ate ice cream cones while sitting in the center of town
For 35,000 @marriottbonvoy points / night and free night awards from holding the @americanexpress Bonvoy credit cards, we got to watch vibrant Hawaiian sunsets from the @westinhapuna.
Starting Sept 14, Marriott is introducing peak and off-peak award pricing, which means travel during high season will undoubtedly require more points. Furthermore, free certificate nights such as the ones we used at the Westin won’t be of use during peak season. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Given that most families tend to travel around the kids’ school schedule, this change essentially counts as a devaluation. If you have any Marriott award nights or points you would like to use for a family vacation, lock in your reservations now before the variable pricing begins in 3 weeks. #WorldTravelAdventurers

Thinking back to our time on the Olympic Peninsula on this flashback Friday!
We spend two glorious weeks boondocking our way through the peninsula while exploring Olympic National Park.
It was one of the most memorable parts of this journey so far. The forests were lush, the coasts were rugged, and the weather was surprisingly perfect.
We wrote a blog post about our time on the OP. Check out the link in our bio!
Have you had the pleasure of visiting this amazing area? What was your favorite part??!?
A few days after we got back from Hawai’i, Ethan went camping with his grandparents. The longest we’ve ever been apart is 2 nights - once! This trip would take him away for 6 nights!
So far it’s been great, he’s having so much fun he doesn’t want to be on the phone to us 😁. And we are heading of for our first holiday alone in 5 years! Whoop!
Another day, another hike. So after a sleepless night of thunderclaps and rain drops we woke up early to a clouded sky and a worry that any hikes were going to be in the clouds! So we headed off to Lake Bohinj, the largest lake in Slovenia! To try and stay low we decided to hike up to peak of Rudnica at 946m up where the view of the lake was supposed to be beautiful. We parked are car in the village and then headed up with the clouds still being low and menacing! Will and Ben were again troopers hiking the steep climb up that was probably the steepest and muddiest climb they have done. The magic power of sweets helped push them through the last few km. Once we arrived near the top we were unsure if we had made it there. Whilst walking up and down the path a bit more the clouds suddenly parted and the view of the lake appeared just as beautiful as we had hoped! We sat on a bench and had a picnic of salami and cheese rolls with bananas and crisps for that extra energy for the way back. Reading the description of the summit in our book it became clear we had not reached the summit and we found a sign to the top where the view over the valley was good but it was not as good as our lunch spot! After the 12km hike we all needed Ice cream so we headed into the village. As we sat there the clouds fully cleared and the sun came out enticing us for a swim in the lake. It was cold but well worth the experience and refreshed our tired hikers body’s. #family#travel#familytravel#backpackingwithkids#holiday#teachersholidays#cheaptravelwithkids#independenttravel#travelblog#fun#holidays#schoolholidays#instagood#happy#kids#culture#roadtrip#travelfamily#familytravelblog#loveyourtimetogether#travelmadfam#familytraveltribe#parentswhowander#travelfam#travelingwithkids#travelingfamily#familytravels#familieswhotravel

As we get ready for a super sunny bank holiday weekend we’re thinking about the magic moments made at River Valley this summer & every summer. Wondering how many lifetime memories will be made during this weekend at our lovely campsite, or exploring the beautiful beaches around us.
Watching our families with children & hounds scramble through the gate onto the trail for a quick stroll or a longer walk to the beach, we know that it’s often the everyday moments that we look back on and treasure.
Doing the gardening. 🌷 The Boss’ favourite spot to collect water. 💦

New homeplace is coming together. We’ve been under water (sweat) preparing it before we roll away from Nashville, but stay tuned for some more photos of the process. // SIDENOTE:: who wants to know the nerdy technical details??
THESE VIEWS NEVER GET OLD, BUT SOME THINGS DO🙌🏼🤣 If you’ve read the blog or previous posts, you might know that I tend to laugh when things aren’t... ideal. 😆And if you didn’t know that, now you know. (Pretty sure my husband finds this trait ridiculously annoying)
I’m seriously laughing right now, as I type this. Basically, we have great views, a simple lifestyle, and are saving tons of money... but we are definitely paying our dues! We have stayed in this house before so we knew it was “rustic.” Nonetheless, we do love it here and knew what we were getting into when we booked this place for 2 months. We have actually been DREAMING of being back here for 2 years... but, since Instagram tends to be a place of highlights only, I wanted to deliver some “behind the scenes” truths. .
Things I am currently laughing about:
➕the laundry situation (as described in a previous post)
➕the leaking fridge which we clean up with a towel that doesn’t get clean in the washer (again, previous post. I seriously laugh every time I have to wipe up the floor)
➕hand washing dishes and baby bottles
➕just found out that I can’t keep things in my bathroom. You know that label on everything that says “store in a cool and dry place?” Well, yeah, the bathroom is not cool and dry 🤣🤣
➕no AC (“welcome to the sweat lodge!” I kid, it’s not that bad but it’s fun to joke about)
➕the kitchen faucet has some annoyances. I’ll leave it at that. ➕the nearest market is almost a mile away and it’s selection is worse than an American convenience store. .
There are so many things we love and we are embracing the struggle. For real! We love it here!💜
What types of surprises have you encountered on your travels? Have you spent much time in a 3rd world country? What’s the most rustic living experience you’ve had? #costarica#puravida

Book Week Book Parade - love it or hate it? I was not a fan UNTIL NOW and my life changing realisation that forevermore Emmie can go as HERSELF from Backyard to Backpack 🤣🤣🤣 AMAZING!! ✔️ And what’s more, all future dress up parties for the two of us are covered!! Just add clothes, passport, a few boarding passes - maybe I’ll create some kind of mobile zipline apparatus to attach myself to - WE ARE SORTED!! 👊👊👊Fistpumps to infinity!!! Emmie had such a great day with my parents watching on, and her teacher made a special announcement that Emmie was the very first student to have written a book and go as herself in the parade!! Emmie was stoked! Such love from the school 💕💕💕 I tried to share this on stories this morning but had a few happy tears and deleted. Happy days! Lovely school and lovely teacher!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙 We are so HAPPY!!
There’s a real tangible reason behind Nicholas Sparks putting every romance novel on the shores of an eastern beach with tall grass blowing in the dunes. .
Isn’t it a profound walk out to the ends of the earth? I can’t ever sit along a beach and not think about who’s sitting across the water maybe thinking about the same. .
I know the beach is usually a place where people meet up for parties and socializing. But they kinda make me sad. Just standing beside the void. Like a really great sad poem. @chathamtides

This right here is a bucket list moment for this kid. He has loved trains since he was a toddler. Every time we saw one, he loved to watch it. He could name all the different kinds of train cars at a very young age, and he played with his trains and tracks for hours. I thought he’d grow out of it, but he didn’t. When I told him that we were going to ride the California Zephyr with @Amtrak, he literally jumped for joy. He told me he’s always wanted to take a train trip—and not just a short trip. He wanted to experience all of it! Eating on the train, sleeping on the train, walking from car to car to see the views. And he was able to do all of that on this amazing trip. He boarded the train in his pajamas and slept in the coziest of rooms, had a delicious breakfast and played card games with his siblings during his train ride. He beamed from ear to ear the entire time. So thank you @Amtrak for making his childhood dreams come true. He told me to tell you he can’t wait to ride the train again!
The last two days have been amazing. We’ve traveled the southeast coast and up the East Fjords and are now in northeast iceland. We’ve seen glaciers, waterfall after waterfall and beautiful towns. I’m trying so hard to commit everything to memory and don’t want to miss anything!

Unexpected after work activity:
Mom, we are going to the beach!
While it is only 15 minutes by car (if you are lucky without traffic jam) or 25 minutes by bike, we don't visit the beach enough.
No particular reason, it's just that most of the time we do other things.
And every time we do visit the beach, we say to eachother:
We should do this more often.
How about you? Do you like spending time at the beach?
Last weekend we took Kayja on her first test flight to San Diego and she did incredibly well! Our luggage pile would've lead you to believe that we were moving to SD for a few months, rather than a 5 day adventure. Luckily my hubs and I are strong and determined people, so we made it work but holy moly, what lessons we learned!
When we booked the trip there was no concept of sleeping in Kayja's day to day, let alone a sleep routine. Back then we just prayed for a 3 hour increment of sleep! But by the time our San Diego trip was here she had a whole sleep ritual that leads her into a long night's sleep (and alone time for mama and papa 🙌💞). For packing this meant having her sound machine (since I've yet to find a good app), a travel crib and a bathing mat for the kitchen sink. Why this pile of things? We chose our Airbnb for it's super walkable location across from the beach, but didn't have a pack n play to loan, nor a bath tub.
While a carseat might be on the list of free things you can check, it can be a huge hassle. By the time the seat and base are bundled into a protective bag, you've got 25+ lbs in a jumbo, awkward backpack to check, retrieve and then schlep onto a shuttle bus to get to your rental car, along with your mountain of gear!
Then baby stuff, like the day to day. That also adds up! A tupperware of formula for evening feedings, 2 packages of diapers and 2 packages of wipes, plus the sink bathing mat...there goes half of my 90 liter duffel! The BOB...there's no way we could've done a trip like this without it. We planned our trip around walking endless miles along the beaches, boardwalks and parks and with strong sun rays and tens of thousands of daily steps...it's an absolute must!
Our packing takeaways and protips for the future: 1. Make sure you can borrow a pack n play from the Airbnb host or hotel and that your accomodations have a bath tub! 2. Rent a car seat! 3. Find a willing host or hotel where you can ship diapers, wipes and other bulky baby stuff to in advance. 4. Make a rain sounds playlist or find a good app!
What are your infant travel protips?

My partner has joined us for our tour around Italy. I’m hugely excited as we end the trip with me being a bridesmaid for my best friend’s wedding. 💕
Today, we’re in Bologna. After a delicious Tagliatelle Ragu near to Piazza Maggiore we took on the challenge of the Asinelli Tower. It’s 97.2 meters high, Bologna’s tallest. To reach the top, you need to take 498 steps on steep wooden staircases. I was worried that little legs wouldn’t make it, but the promise of the view and an ice cream at the bottom was all the motivation the kids needed.
As we needed to burn the ice cream off we headed to Parco Giardini Margherita. Along with a couple of playgrounds it has a lake full of turtles, loads of them! Completely random and very cute!
Fast forward to a few hours later from when this pic was taken we experienced racism on our day trip in Dresden😔
I wanted to start off all of my pics and stories about our latest trip on a happy note but first I want to get this off my chest.
We were waiting at one of the platforms for our bus back to Prague when two men who were in the same bus stand with us began to loudly talk about Meshach (who is Indian ethnicity). The guy said Meshach was and I quote him - “one of those troublemaker Pakistanis” according to these men. And telling Meshach (who is holding our 6 year old son, Tristan, who was asleep in his arms by the way) that his “mother land” is Germany & white is best. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So we left the bus stand to avoid anymore confrontation when minutes later the guy comes over to me and the group of women I was talking to about the bus schedule. I don’t understand German but based on some of the occasional English words he threw in, he was basically “warning” them to watch out for me and Meshach because we could be making trouble. The women just waved him off and he left. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m so upset that a couple of jerks ruined the remaining day of our visit to Dresden. And to make matters worse! Two federal officers who were checking non-white bystanders’ passports at the bus stands spotted us, came over and asked us questions like where is our luggage. We told them it was just a day trip from Prague. They asked for our bus tickets and passports and when they found out we were from the United States they started being nice to us, apologized and left us alone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m trying really hard to not write off ever visiting Germany again based on our experience in one city but it’s so hard! Every time I think about our day I feel hurt and I wish we never went there.

#ad The kids had the absolute best time at @seaworldsandiego last week, but if I’m being honest, I might have had just a tad more fun than them! Brought back so many memories from when I was a kid. One thing I did learn, sharks are much more frightening when you’re 7 years old than as an adult! ✨But the highlight of our visit was definitely Club Current, one of the 8 experiences at SeaWorld's Electric Ocean. Think a mini concert for kids with strobe lights and fog. The kids LOOOOOOVED it. I couldn’t help myself. Had to dance with them. Check out my stories to see all the fun! #SeaWorldSanDiego#SeaWorldShare#SeaItGlow
It’s August so it’s basically Halloween, right?! 🤣🤣🤣 October is the best month e v e r in my opinion - I have already started planning this years family costume! Last year was so much fun. Are you a sad-to-see-summer-go kinda person? Or stoked for fall like me?! Also very excited that Jack’s birthday is in October too 🎃

Baby Jack before he was earthside! I will admit, my pregnancy with Jack wasn’t easy. I dealt with A LOT - emotionally and physically. Yet, I still miss being pregnant. I kept a pregnancy journal this time around and I am so glad I did. 💕
