BIO @demistokes#3 @mancity@puma Left-sided full-back Demi Stokes joined City from the South Florida Bulls in January 2015, having started her senior career with Sunderland aged just 16.
She followed in the footsteps of Lucy Bronze and Jennifer Beattie in making the move to Manchester, as Nick Cushing continued to strengthen his side ahead of the new season.
Eager to embark on a new challenge and a new chapter in her life, Stokes was thrilled to join a club she felt is leading the way in encouraging the rise of women's football.
Born in South Shields, she signed for Sunderland's youth team at the age of eight and went on to make her senior debut in 2007. She played a part in the side that secured the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division and reached the final of the FA Women's Cup in 2009 - a feat she still regards as a career highlight.
She remained at the North East outfit before accepting a four-year scholarship to the University of South Florida in 2011. The following year, she made 13 appearances for Canada's Vancouver Whitecaps before continuing her career with her college side.
The youngster tasted success on the international stage, having lifted the 2009 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship alongside Bronze, Toni Duggan and Isobel Christiansen. She also captained Great Britain to a gold medal in the 2013 Summer Universiade in Russia.
Stokes has been an integral part of City's successes over recent years and will represent England at the 2019 World Cup.
Three people are reported dead and several seriously injured after riots Saturday night between #fans of #rival#football#clubs in Honduras.
The #derby#match in the capital city #Tegucigalpa between Motagua and Olimpia -- bitter opponents -- turned ugly after the bus carrying members of the #Motagua team was attacked ahead of the match at the national stadium.
The bus was pelted with stones and other missiles, leaving three players, former Celtic star Emilio Izaguirre, Jonathan Rougier and Roberto Moreira needing hospital treatment for facial wounds.
"Bottles, stones were thrown at us and the players threw themselves on the floor screaming," Motagua coach Diego Vasquez was quoted in local media.
Following the incident, the match was canceled, but several thousand fans were already inside the stadium when the decision was made, sparking frantic scenes with many being caught up in #teargas#fired by local police as they left in a hurry.
The violent clashes both inside and outside the stadium left a string of casualties, confirmed by Julieth Chavarría, a spokesman for Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa.
She told AFP that "seven people were admitted, three of them died and four are still being treated in the emergency room." In a post on social media, Motagua showed pictures of its players also receiving treatment in the hospital after the attack on the bus, which it blamed on members of the Ultra-Faithful wing of the Olimpia fan club.
The 33-year-old Izaguirre, who rejoined Motagua after winning seven Scottish Premier League titles with Celtic, later reassured fans on his Instagram account that he had not been seriously injured, but revealed his anguish at the loss of life. "Thank God I am fine," he said.
"There were bits of glass that flew into an eye, but I've been told it is nothing serious and there is no lasting damage. "The painful thing for me is the deceased. We are all Hondurans, no matter what team you support, we all must have respect for our fellow human beings," he added.
