A beautiful Laughing Kookaburra perched on a tree branch with some light rain. Note the blue in the background is no photoshop trickery but the incredible blue of Lake Eacham in Crater Lakes National Park. Whilst I was photographing this, my partner, Silvia was swimming in the lake which has freshwater crocodiles in apparently!!
Aka the Lotus bird, it has tremendously long toes which increases flotation by aiding weight distribution. Also known as the Jesus bird, if you’re into those ripping yarns of yore.
Zoom in on those tootsies 😲😄👌🏼

That time of the year is now here. The critically endangered Florican (with only about 250 individuals left in the world) starts showing itself up to the world with its unique mating display in India from 20th July to 20th August. This coincides with monsoons which is essential for 1. Growth of grass/crops in which the Floricans nest and 2. Insects on which they feed.
The outrageous 'jump' is accompanied by a frog-like croaking sound to attract females and announce supremacy to other males in the lek.
At the current rate of decline, these magnificent birds will disappear in the next couple of decades. Not taking over grasslands, reducing pesticides in crops and regulating the population of feral dogs can save the Florican from going extinct.
