When I was first dating my wife I thought she didn’t care for flowers. I got her some and she left them in her hot car and they died almost instantly. I think I’ve realized she just didn’t know the rules back then. That girls love flowers. Because now, girl loves flowers. | Day 264 #fujiframez
Training for back to back annual Dragon Boat World Championships, first for ICF and then for IDBF, has been one very long road. I’m typically a right-side paddler, it’s how I started in the sport, but for this year, I decided to try out on my less-strong left-side instead. And my initial tryout time trial results clearly showed I needed a lot more work on my left than my usual preference.
Fortunately, my mid-season performance was good enough to qualify for the national team. But I wasn’t going to take it easy and just qualify to make the team; I wanted to be as strong a team member I could be. So I continued to both train hard and drop a couple percentage points of body fat while maintaining same weight, and on my final individual time trial, I moved up in ranking...instead of bottom 25th percentile, I was top 25th. While I’m excited about this, I’m just as proud of my teammates because I knew every one was training just as hard; many of the finish times were within seconds of each other.
I’m so honored to be part of this great team of paddlers. I’m looking forward to representing the USA. Even if I’m just a bench warmer; it just means we have a really strong roster. Let’s do this!
And a big shoutout to my local club team coach and fellow national team member, @j_monkey. He not only provided sound training guidance but, he also let me use one of his outrigger canoes to train on. That was key in improving my performance because in a one-seater, there’s no one to blame for a poor performance but yourself. #DragonBoat#TeamUSA
