Climate records have been broken across the world this year, and despite its equatorial setting, Singapore is no exception. July 2019 was the warmest month on record, with a mean temperature of 29oC (32-35oC during the day), and this month Singapore has been experiencing its first dry spell in over 5 years. At 22 days it is already the second longest on record, with islandwide daily rainfall under 0.2mm, and we are rapidly approaching the record of 27 days (set in Feb-Mar 2014). This is due to a climate phenomena known as the Indian Ocean Dipole, where Singapore receives warm dry air from northern Australia, coupled with below average sea surface temperatures. Weather predictions suggest that these conditions could persist for months. We can’t say for sure whether an individual event like this is related to climate change, but we do know that such events will become more common in a warmer world.
The first video was taken on my cycle into work @earthobservatorysg this morning, and stands in stark contrast to the second video taken shortly before the dry spell started. Most of the grass has died, the basket ferns have wilted, and many of the trees aren’t looking too happy either. The third (bonus) video is of a late cycle home before the dry spell. Yes, the light you see at 12s is me triggering the radar trap - it is at the bottom of the hill!
