ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD REVIEW:
Quentin Tarantino, absent from the film scene since 2016’s ‘The Hateful Eight’, is back with ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’. Starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, the movie follows Rick Dalton, a faded B-movie star, and his stunt double, Cliff Booth, during the final years of the Hollywood Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
The ensemble cast in this film is too large to mention, but to put it simply, the performances are what make this movie work. Brad Pitt is exceptional as Cliff Booth, nailing the pitch-black comedic tone on the head with his performance. It is arguably the best work of his career, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it were awarded heavily during Oscar season. Margaret Qualley and Margot Robbie shine as Pussycat and Sharon Tate, and DiCaprio is as good as ever as the lead Rick Dalton. Emilie Hirsch, Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler and Bruce Dern make up a fraction of the supporting cast, with everybody involved being at the top of their games.
Tarantino’s direction is sharp and slick, not too dissimilar to the style we as viewers have come to know and love. The writing is just as strong, with the script once again finding the sweet spot between comedy, drama and outright absurdity. The characters are all also very well-written, with dynamic and complex relationships established between them which created a perfect flowing narrative.
The 1960s scene was captured spectacularly through artistic choices made. The costume design, particularly that for Robbie’s Tate, was incredible, and the production design helped create a 1960s vibe unlike one I’ve ever seen in a film made recently. The long runtime didn’t cause the film to drag one bit. I even wish the movie went for even longer; that’s how amazing it was.
Overall, ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ is one of Tarantino’s best, thanks to a star-studded cast, top-notch writing and directing, and a variety of artistic choices made that result in an atmosphere that you as an audience member can immerse yourself in. This is the first film of the year that screams ‘Oscar contender’, and will definitely have a place on my best of 2019 list
