If you’ve got an old Gameboy lying around then you’re onto a winner as a 2014 study found that a few games of Tetris helped to reduce food cravings.
That’s right. If you’ve got a food craving, one of the best things you can do is distract yourself.
Remember the tune, ‘do do dodo doo do dooo dooo dooo…,’ no? Just me then. I get it, you probably haven’t played Tetris in about 20 years and I’m quite surprised it was the game of choice used by researchers, but the findings still stand true: video games and other types of distractions can help you eat less.
One study also reported that playing with some modelling clay helped reduce chocolate cravings.
So how does it work? This type of distraction is called ‘Elaborated Intrusion Theory (EI)’ and it works because a visually based task (like playing a computer game) decreases craving and craving imagery.
Researchers at the University of Exeter have even created an app that works on the same principal and helps players to develop better food habits. The first round of results showed promise: after four 10-minute sessions, players ate around 220 calories less per day.
If you’re prone to cravings, have some form of distraction at hand. For example, play a few games on your phone, browse Instagram and Facebook briefly, watch a bit of Netflix, find something to take your mind off the food.
