A peak experience is a moment accompanied by a euphoric mental state and often achieved by self-actualizing individuals. They are rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experiences that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect upon the experimenter. Peak experiences are not necessarily about what the activity is, but the ecstatic, blissful feeling that is being experienced during it 🦋
Is it the city where you grew up?
Is it where you sleep every night?
Is it your childhood home?
Is it where you feel most sheltered and at ease?
Is it where you’ve formed the most memories?
For me, it’s a hodgepodge of definitions. I am tied by memories and family to Toronto where I grew up for 19 years, but when I return to my family’s house, it feels foreign. I live in a van in a city where I’ve been for 9 years, across the country from my “hometown”, across the world from Asia in which I was born where most of my extended family resides. I spend much of my time in our neighbouring country down south. Not any one of these is my home.
Often I get back to my van and even if we’re in a different country, I feel at home.
On certain mountaintops, also at home.
But when we’re driving back from the US to Vancouver, I also call that “going home”.
If something happened to our van Bessie and we moved into a new vehicle, I would still feel at home because I’d be with my husband, and home is where he is.
So I can’t decide whether I’m home-confused, or home-fluid? Either way flexibility of definitions is probably a good thing.
PS we’re heading back to Iceland in 2 days! This country is a bit like home too, being where we got married. And who doesn’t want to live under their own private cliff and moody ecosystem?
Black sand beach is truly magical.
The icebergs drifting ashore from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon on the black volcanic sand create a perfect contrast of blue sea, black sand and transparent ice looking like uncut diamonds bathing in the glorious sunshine.
On the south coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula, there’s a village with only a hotel, Hótel Búðir, and a tiny black church called the Búðakirkja. It’s striking and dreamlike to say the least!
Two sisters who lived nearby sang to our group, that’s on the video.
She liked the moon 🌙 because, like herself, it shines its brightest when no one was around to see ✨

On this day in 2015, we moved to Iceland.
The first thing we did was go to the Of Monsters and Men concert at Harpa that we bought tickets for months before we knew we would be cleared to move.
The second thing we did was hike Glymur (one of the stops that we didn’t have time to do on our honeymoon).
The third thing we did was travel to the Westman Islands for a day of hiking as we celebrated our anniversary.
There were so many unknown things about selling everything we owned and moving abroad that scared the shit out of me, and made me doubt our life changing move. But I’m so glad we trusted our gut and took the leap. Now, I can’t imagine our life without Iceland in it.
It’s safe to say we haven’t lost our adventurous spirits, and safer to say that our love for Iceland is stronger than ever.
So grateful to call this place home - takk Ísland, elskan mín. 💚🇮🇸

In the northeast corner of the Westfjords sits the village of Djúpavík.
I’m not talking just any village, I’m talking the cutest, most beautiful scenery, most quiet place you’ve ever seen.
On and did you see that huge waterfall as it’s backdrop⁉️
You👏🏼 can’t 👏🏼 make 👏🏼 these places up you guys!
The village used to be a massive herring factory in the early 1900’s AND the band @sigurros recently recorded a song in one of the abandoned buildings 😍
It’s out of your way from everything, but I can’t recommend this place enough! #icelandwithaview
