Mango make a man go crazy 🥭
Another year that we got to visit our dear friend & have our pick of some of the finest mangoes one could ever hope to taste! Well, we came pretty late in the season, but to us, the variety was still outstanding. I honestly had no idea about the mango game until about three years ago.
Did you know, there are over 1500 recorded mango varieties?
These mangoes are nothing like the boiled or gas-ripened ones that you get from stores. It would almost be a crime to ruin one of these babies in a smoothie! If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend trying the mangoes fresh from south Florida. We brought a whole haul back for friends & family & got to host a few mango tasting parties 🎉
We visited four different mango farms & ended up with six different cultivars this year~ Valencia Pride, Lancitilla, Turpentine, Kent, & some of my favorites I have gotten to try so far: Lemon Zest & Franchell! We feasted like kings on a delicious meal of smoked mullet & mango~ truly a Floridian delicacy. We peeled mangoes like bananas & ate them in the sunshine. Mangoes as big as my head, mangoes that looked more like papaya, mangoes named after terpenes & desserts. Mangoes for every meal! One night we made a fresh Moroccan-mango chutney with one of the Franchells and some Harissa spices 🔥
I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Twelve Tribes or what you may have heard about them... I have seen their big bus around at various music festivals. Well, they have a commune of sorts in Florida with a farm stand you can visit. Since we came so late in the season, there were hardly any mangoes left. Two of their members came out to greet us, then showed us out into their fields & picked some their last remaining Valencias fresh off their trees for us. It was very kind, & left me with a good impression of their community🌳
Still enjoying the last couple lemon zests we have squirreled away but already dreaming of mango season next year 🙏✨
