“Not all those who wander are lost.” J.R.R Tolkien
Wandering is integral to a healthy canine lifestyle—and for humans as well. It means exploring with an open heart and leaving imbalance behind (even just temporarily, one breath at a time). It’s the embodiment of “living in the moment.” Anything can happen, and often does!
In pet dogs, this part of their psychology is usually unfulfilled or severely limited. Not because their owners don’t care! Society (and, frankly, the dog training industry), has ingrained in us that all a dog needs are love and treats.
When I am asked to rehabilitate an unbalanced dog, their symptoms are just the tip of the iceberg. Stopping the symptoms takes mere moments. But the FUEL for those symptoms is usually that the dog feels crazy from unfulfillment—that is, too much affection and not nearly enough exercise or discipline. Not enough instinctual living. Not being honored as a pack animal, a canine, but rather misunderstood as a furry, rational little human.
Solving their unfulfillment is 99% of my job because it relies on the owner to accept the painful reality that what’s best for the dog doesn’t often jive with WHY we got a dog in the first place. After all, aren’t dogs supposed to just love and entertain us? Unconditional love? What’s all this about leadership, daily exercise, and dog psychology? Ugh!
I completely sympathize, having gone through the same process with Jacob. Actually, I wake up feeling this way more often than not! Some owners will decide to rehome because they just don’t want that kind of commitment, and that’s ok! It’s not going to traumatize the dog; actually it will set them free to be with another owner who will fulfill them.
My point is... Dogs aren’t rational or emotional, they are instinctual. Honor their instincts and everything else will smooth out. Think like a dog, lead like a dog. Aim high, yet respect your own limits, too. Take time to wander.
I know you want to do it... we all want to do it... so feel no shame to boop it👆🏼
This is the nose of a dog that can become a bloodhound and smell something so far away and find it, but this is also the nose that takes forever to find a treat that I drop right in front of her. 😐 I don’t even know if she has a good sniffer or not... does your dog have a good sniffer?
This was taken with my new 4k + macro lens from @rhinoshield , totally digging it!

Today I’m going to the lake! I also have whipped out my camera again since we’ve gotten back from Florida and boy does it feel good!!!⠀
Photography is truly the best hobby. I would love for it to be my real job one day. Anyone on here a full-time photographer?! ⠀

♡ I changed my username again. I'm not quite ready to part with writerandthewild, and I suspect it will soon reappear elsewhere. For now we will be posting as twowildwonders, which perhaps isn't entirely different, but is new and exciting. The content won't change except that I may be posting a bit more dog sports content as well, so worry not. I hope you excuse the confusion that comes with change and keep following our journey ♡
