Whether it’s fine dining or casual street food, we love when local and seasonal ingredients can take center stage. It’s especially important for Hawaii, not only because it’s more environmentally friendly, but also to help support our local farmers and growers. At Hawaii Kine Grinds we’re all about local. We can’t wait to share stories about Hawaii restaurants, chefs, purveyors, and farms with you!

Mangoes!!Mangoes !!Mangoes!! You can never have enough of it!! Are you a mango lover?
This season I had loads nothing comparable to the mango gardens of my parents’ back home, so many varieties starting from Dusshari, Safeda, Chausa, Langra some local names which I remember since childhood days. The other day I was talking to my mum and she mentioned this year there was a great produce of mangoes with the season coming to an end now. It tempted me to get my last box here, though must admit have been very greedy with mangoes this year every time I bought a box with a recipe in mind, just could not resist enjoying every bite of this juicy pulpy fruit, so addictive.
Also am a bit fussy since childhood days of picking mangoes to my choice just cannot get over this practice.
My 4years Little Miss is very observant, said “Mummie you should share your bites, sharing is caring, otherwise your tummy will be like Peppa’s Daddy 🐷”
Mommie had no words to express😂😂😂🤣& struck by innocence.
Finally last box of the season ends with this enticing healthy bowl of Mango Raita (Indian dip), which has all the flavours your taste bud is hunting for.
600ml fresh yogurt
2 small to medium size ripe mangoes, diced
1-2 green chilli, deseed & chopped
1/4 tsp chilli flakes, adjust to taste (optional)
1-2 tbsp honey (optional )
Black salt to taste
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp brown mustard seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds
1-2 strings fresh curry leaves
Leave some tempering to garnish raita
To prepare this refreshing raita recipe, wash, peel and dice the mangoes. Now whisk the yoghurt until smooth.Add in black salt, honey, chilli flakes and chopped deseeded green chillies.Take a tempering pan, add oil, mustard & fennel seeds. Let it splutter for few seconds on the low flame, Remove from heat, add the curry leaves.Throw in the diced mango to whisked yoghurt batter, stir in the tempering.
Ready to dive in !!

Hello 😍guys, it’s summer and mango season. You can easily have a beautiful mango plant at home. These are tropical plants, so you’ll want a sunny, warm place in your home to provide the best growing conditions. Buy a ripe mango, remove the husk/seed from mango, clean and dry the husk, remove the seed as you see in the video and clean it.
The seed can be planted directly in the soil or kept inside a moist paper towel then in the plastic bag. Blow in the plastic bag and tie it. Check every day for signs of sprouting. Ensure your cloth is damp. After approximately 10 days when the seed has sprouted you can plant it in potting mix. Do not over water the plant and wait till the soil is dry.

Meet Rupam Kumar @sujatha.gardens from Hyderabad, Telangana, India 🇮🇳 “Sujatha Gardens is a family owned and operated farm. Farming started off as a passion and as a getaway with kids. Very soon we realized that our kids too had made a strong bond with Nature.
We strongly believe in following our age old traditions and natural ripening on the trees. We use cow manure and compost that we prepare on the farm using plant waste. We grow 11 varieties of mangoes and many other fruits, herbs and seasonal vegetables.
We organize “Mango Harvest Festival” which was conceptualised in 2014... we call it “AamParty” ( Aam means Mango )...here we Celebrate Nature! Guests At AamParty get to learn, pick, taste and buy fresh, chemical free, healthy mangoes and other farm fresh produce. We also use this platform to encourage healthy living, reducing waste, compost making, plantation drive etc. We encourage kids to play with mud, and make seed bombs. We organize interactive sessions on harmful effects of plastic and protecting our environment by making small changes in our lives.
We have some animals at the farm too like Emus, rabbits, turkeys, cows, goats, ducks and hens. Kids get to feed them and play with them. By the end of the day everyone is generally positively influenced and convinced that they sign our Pledge Wall and take a pledge to quit using single use plastics to protect our environment.
We need to connect our children with Nature to make them calmer, responsible and caring adults and save them from a Nature Deficit Disorder. At the same time take a small step and do our bit to save the environment and our planet.” @humanswhogrowfood features stories of home gardeners, farmers and community gardens across borders and cultures.
