It may sound counterintuitive, but I can ensure you - physical activity is a powerful pick-me-up that actually reduces fatigue and definitely boosts energy levels not only at that moment but also in the long run. With regular exercise, you'll feel much more energized, refreshed, and alert at all times.
About a year after Ethan died I decided I wanted to run a half marathon. 13 miles for 13 months in the hospital. I knew little about this grief journey then. I think I thought I could outrun my sadness somehow. As I trained my body became more tight and I had to stop training. Grief is intensely physical. At the time that intensity was just too much for my body.
Yesterday (Sunday) I completed the Falmouth Road Race. It was a fun and hard race. It felt good to accomplish a goal. During a point I felt so tired I wanted to stop, I passed a veterans group (there’s tons of charity teams) and saw a young man in a wheelchair who clearly also had cognitive impairment. I thought of Bodey and no way I was I going to stop.
When I started training I broke out the playlist I had made several years ago. During those years I was running out my anger and my guilt. Funny enough those songs didn’t push me like they used to. A sign of growth I suppose. A measure of change on the inside. At first it kind of bothered me that I couldn’t connect with these songs that had meant so much to me and then I reframed and felt proud of the growth and thankful for this measure of change that has taken place in my heart.
On my arm are written 3 names - Ethan, Bodey and Teddy. Teddy is my 2 year old nephew who was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. His every moment and every bite of food must be monitored. These three boys reminded me of the gifts of a healthy body. They were my inspiration for the race.
Thank you to all of you who donated to support the run! It was an honor to be part of Team Dean and support heart families. I’ll be back next year!
