Every now and then I forget what it’s like to be a photographer or a creative person in general. It sucks sometimes as we all know. The challenges of self doubt, of execution of ideas and of finding ones artistic and creative voice can be burdonsome at times. These are first world problems and I’m acutely aware of this and of how good my life is compared to many others. But sometimes, the weight of creativity and the self doubt can get on top of you. I think for a while I forgot what being a photographer was really all about. I forgot about chasing the light, forgot about those inbetween moments, those little every day things of nothingness that through the lens take on a life of their own. This is how I started as a photographer. Photographing through the mountains of central Italy and just capturing the world around me however insignificant or grandiose it seemed. For a while I stopped looking at the world like that.
So I picked up my Pentax 67ii this time through Europe and chased the light. Those fallen fragments, the textures and tones and life’s little untouched and unplanned corners. And I’ve been dreading getting my film back ever since. Nervous about what I’d captured and the amount of pressure I put on myself is at times ridiculous. But it’s good to strive. Not for others acclaim or adulation but for your own intrinsic sense of self worth and what you are proud of as a visual artist.
So this post is about that. It’s about me being pretty stoked with what I’ve done. A feeling I’d perhaps not felt for a while ( I’m incredibly self critical in case you didn’t already know that) but after getting these scans back it was as if a fog and weight had lifted off my shoulders and I felt what it’s like to be a photographer and an artist again. It’s a nice feeling. So expect more of this in the future. It’s time to pair things back, stop rushing, be thoughtful, imaginative and a little bit more composed. I hope you enjoy them. And thanks so much to Peter from @ikigai.camera for these incredible scans.
