“Heather covered hills, stretching in purple slender off over the hills of Scotland are the signature landscape of the Scottish Moors. So I knew if I didn’t come back with a spectacular heather picture for our National Geographic story I’d be in big trouble. We spent a week looking for great heather, perfectly in bloom, a journey that took us over much of the Highlands and then out to the Outer Hebrides.
Finally I told Paul Tomkins, my assistant from Scotland, that I thought the best we had seen was way back at Mar Lodge so we caught the ferry back, arrived in Braemar late so we could hit the hills at sunrise then next morning. It was spectacular. One great break in the clouds let shafts of light flood the valley before racing up the hill toward us. There were only a few seconds when it all came together like this, but we go it.
