Common Name: Malabar Pit viper
Scientific Name: Trimeresurus malabaricus
One of My all time favourite snake endemic the western ghats. Also exhibits polymorphism (found in 5 different morphs or colours). Unlike other snakes these snakes have a heat sensing pit, which is unique to pit vipers they are called “loreal pits”and are located in between nostril and eyes it is used for detection of warm blooded creatures and regulating their body temperature. They are often found in the same place for days together, along streams or forest paths on the plants or in the grounds. Waiting in ambush for the prey and when the time comes they strike with remarkable precision. They are venomous and have long fangs which are hinged on to the upper jaw so they can be folded when not in use. Human casualties are not recorded, still they can deliver a very painful bite and the victim will have to be hospitalised for next few days. They are viviparous and give birth to young ones instead of laying eggs. Which is another unique feature about these snakes. #pitviper#reptiles#snakes#snakesofindia#reptilesofindia#reptilesofinstagram#natgeoyourshot#natgeo#rainforest#westernghats#trimeresurus#herpetology#wildlifephotography#wildlifebiologist#wildlifebiology#endemic

My first Giant Monkey Frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) a few weeks ago, easily a favourite for many people. These frogs have the highest temperature tolerance of any free ranging amphibian 🐸 📸@cristiandela2
