Located on the east coast of the island, Trincomalee is 237 kilometres (147 miles) north east of Colombo, the city is home to the famous koneswaram temple from where it developed and earned its historic Tamil name Thirukonamalai.
Trincomalee offers a variety of activities and attractions as well as great Beaches such as : Nilaveli Beach, Uppuveli Beach, Dutch Bay, Sali Beach, and Marble Beach.
You can go to Pigeon island for snorkeling this area is known for sea turtles, The trip should cost around Rs2000 ($11.2) for the boat, and additional Rs2000 ($11.2) to Rs3900 ($21.7) for the Pigeon Island national park ticket fee, the price depends on the amount of people, the snorkeling gear is not included and will cost around Rs400 ($2.2) to Rs600 ($3.3).
Diving is another option in one of the many dive sites along Trincomalee's coast, the price will be around Rs4500 ($25) to Rs7200 ($40) per dive including the gear.
There are more then a few landmarks to visit while visiting Trincomalee such as : Koneswaram temple, Lover's Leap, Ravana's Cut,
Fort Frederick, Kali Kovil, Gokanna Raja Maha Viharaya, Salli Muthumariamunam Kovil, Arulmigu Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Kovil, Kanniya Hot Water Wells, and Velgam Vehera.
Public transportation is mostly on the main roads and costs around Rs20 ($0.12) to Rs50 ($0.28)
If you want to wander around at your own pace there are a few options, either rent a scooter for around Rs1000 ($5.5) to Rs1500 ($8.34),
Or take a Tuk tuk for the whole day for around Rs5000 ($27.8) to Rs6000 ($33.4),
If you want to travel comfortably you can hire a private car with a Tour guide for the whole day for around Rs5700 ($31.7) to Rs6000 ($33.4). Accommodation is available in all levels of comfort from backpacker hostels for around Rs700 ($3.9) to Rs1800 ($10) per night in Alles Garden and Nilaveli areas, as well as luxurious resorts right on the beach for around Rs1900 ($10.5) to Rs18,000 ($100) per night in Nilaveli, Alles Garden, and uppuveli.
