Evening at the legendary Peekamoose Blue Hole and (↔️swipe) Buttermilk Falls, Peekamoose...both on the same enchanted road which winds itself deep between high Catskill peaks, along the Rondout Creek. For scale, note the human being at left in the second image. .
There are only two routes through the central peaks of the Catskill Park; Frost Valley and Peekamoose. Thursday's trip to Hunter presented an opportunity to take these two wilderness routes in either direction (instead of skirting the range by taking routes 209 or 213). I'd never seen the Blue Hole near sunset, deserted, the last stragglers departing. This magnificent hush might be akin to how naturalist John Burroughs found this natural pool when he climbed over the range. He wrote of this discovery in the mid-1800's. I remember this as a sparsely visited spot, until Conde Nast Traveler exposed its wonders to the world. It has since been overrun by visitors, many of whom show little respect for the environment. So much so, that nowadays a permit is required to park nearby on weekends. So by all means, visit this magical mile, and perhaps dive into the frozen bluegreen depths. Clamber over the rocks from the road to the pristine falls which emerge from the cliffs in a cascade that varies with the seasons. But come by on a weekday to marvel at these wonders with an eye towards preservation and future generations. . 👆See my stories for video including old footage of the kids diving into the frrrrreezing waters of the Blue Hole👆 . . .

Part 3. The Mystery Of the Old Spanish Mine on the Shawangunk Ridge. .
In Napanoch on the Land Of Egbert DeWitt (Ehh-Bert D' White) two mines were known. Clearing and excavation began immediately after the message to him arrived. As with all undertakings in Provincial New York that were to the benefit of the community everyone took a part. This was frequently noted by Englishmen from back home and other visitors from Europe. People and/or provisions came willingly from each homestead and everyone contributed in one way or another. Quite odd to their Fellow Europeans. The Young able-bodied Men took the most strenuous work. As did the stubborn old and un-able Men. Every part of the task was assigned, removing debris, carting it off, collecting the lead, mending the overstrenuous and unfortunate, serving food and beer, and commiserating with, and raising up the spirits of the group. There was no indication of who dug the Mines and there were no records of them in Albany, nor any records mentioning any record containing information about them. If you were to look at the archives and read only a handful of the documents they hold you soon would realize everything is recorded somewhere. Actions and objects have a value. Valuables have owners. Everyone, everywhere, always, wants to know about their possessions. And they do not want to hear "We don't know." New Netherland was owned and run as a business, The Dutch West India Company. Businessmen ask many questions about their business. It is their business. But, there are no records of the Mines in Amsterdam. New York is a Royal Province. Not a colony with many freeholders as most are. It is a personal possession of the Crown. As is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Monarchs ask many questions. It's mostly what they do. They want immediate answers. They have multitudes of men to ask and record those answers for them. So many men they have to put them in cabinets. His Majesty King George II has not, nor have any of his men, asked a single question or made a single record of the Mines. In the nearly 100 years of British Rule no King, nor Queen had. So who were they made for?
