From @int.anti.poaching.foundation FIELD REPORT: In a joint operation with Investigations from Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) and Minerals Flora & Fauna Unit (MFFU) of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), we recovered a live young female Pangolin which was about to be sold into trafficking rings. In the midst of the trade and close to the Mozambique border, the seller (who was also allegedly involved in ivory poaching) was arrested.
The accused was charged at Guruve Court with unlawful possession of a live pangolin, and sentenced to 9 years in prison.
Pangolins are shy, solitary, and sensitive little creatures - defenseless against humans. They are also believed to be the most trafficked nonhuman mammal in the world. Their scales are used in traditional Chinese medicine and their bushmeat is considered a delicacy. Because of this, pangolins are at risk of extinction. So far, there has been no proven medicinal value in pangolin scales.
Sadly, hundreds of thousands of pangolins are slaughtered every year. Please help spread awareness (respectfully) and join others as we educate the world about the plight of the pangolin.
