A terrific ‘Archive’ page by Robin Muir in the new British Vogue ( October 2018). He looks back at a 10-page jazz portfolio shoot by Duffy with model Judy Dent in the October 1961 issue. The portfolio includes then well-known names like Humphrey Lyttleton and Edmundo Ross. Here we see Dent with the Koola Lobitos, the band formed by Fela Ransome-Kuti who was 23/24. That’s him on the trumpet, his chosen instrument at the time. They played a fusion of jazz and highlife. Fela Kuti had left his native Nigeria in 1958 to study medicine in London but then switched to music. He went on to become an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, composer, pioneer of Afrobeat and political activist back in Nigeria. The accompanying caption, Muir tells us, describes their beat as ‘pulsing and strong’. Vogue - can you run the whole portfolio online? @edward_enninful @tohansvensson @britishvogue #felakuti #kingofafrobeat @duffy_archive #afrobeat #photography @rkm_muir #60s #magazinedesign #hardyamies #johncavanagh #koolalobitos #judydent #brianduffy
