In 2008 in a pre-recorded interview for Radio 2 Bill Kenwright, theatre impresario and Tommy Steele's friend, said that 23-year-old Elvis met up with England's own brightest rock and roll star in Bermondsey in 1958!
Later Steele confirmed the veracity of the event, claiming with discretion that: "What happened many years ago is something sweet and memorable. It was an event shared by two young men sharing the same love of their music and the same thrill of achieving something unimaginable. I swore never to divulge publicly what took place and I regret that it has found some way of getting into the light. I only hope he can forgive me." Whether this is the truth or not we can't tell! Certainly the first documented visit of The King to Britain dates to the 3rd of March 1960, when Elvis (who was finishing his American army national service) stopped over in Ayrshire, in Scotland, for less than two hours at Prestwick Airport to refuel.
